Love is strange and so is the music business
sometimes. Case in point, the hit song "Love Is Strange" recorded by Mickey Baker & Sylvia Robinson, a duo who fashioned themselves after the success of Les Paul & Mary Ford. The credit for who wrote the song is in dispute. One area not in dispute is that the music is based on a guitar riff created by Jody Williams for another song recorded by Billy Stewart ("Billy's Blues). Sylvia claims she took the riff, fleshed it out and wrote the lyrics for "Love Is Strange". Guitarist Bo Diddley claims that he was the one to accomplish this, and Bo actually recorded a version of "Love Is Strange" before Mickey & Sylvia did (but it was not released to the public until 2007) so he may have a case. At any rate, the Mickey & Sylvia version was the big hit released in November of 1956 peaking at #11 on the pop charts in early 1957. Also, Sylvia Robinson is the same "Sylvia" that went on to have a hit with a song called "Pillow Talk" in 1973.
I was in 9th grade in 1956...what a geek! The music saved me. I hadn't associated Buddy Holly here but when I paid attenttion, Holly's thing is definately in the guitar and syntax. Nice observation Zrock0076....thanks

Buddy Holly has a version as well. This has a Holly flare to it as well, but then Buddy sang quite a few Bo Diddley influenced tunes.

I wish someone would post Bo's version. This version sounds like it has a lot going on. I can't pick out what's making that wall of sound beneath the lead guitar. I hear the obvious percussion, and can hear the bass and a piano tinkling, but what is the backbone of the recording? Sounds like maybe an organ? Whatever it is, this recording sounds unique, and very progressive for 1956. I would have loved to see it played live.
