Plot Summary: In 1937, Nanking stands at the forefront of a war between China and Japan. As the invading Japanese Imperial Army overruns China's capital city, desperate civilians seek refuge behind the nominally protective walls of a western cathedral. Here, John Miller (Christian Bale), an American trapped amidst the chaos of battle and the ensuing occupation takes shelter, joined by a group of innocent schoolgirls and thirteen courtesans, equally determined to escape the horrors taking place outside the church walls. Struggling to survive the violence and persecution wrought by the Japanese army, it is an act of heroism which eventually leads the seemingly disparate group to fight back, risking their lives for the sake of everyone. Through treacherous surroundings and facing unimaginable evil, "The Flowers of War," inspired by true life events, manages to tell a genuine story of hope, love and sacrifice. With nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, fate always has a way of bringing the most unlikely heroes together.

Adapted from Geling Yan's historical novel 13 Flowers of Nanjing (Harvill Secker / Random House; 2012), "The Flowers of War" stars Academy Award® winning actor Christian Bale ("The Fighter," "The Dark Knight") as John Miller, an American trapped within the besieged city of Nanking when it is invaded by the Japanese Army. The ensemble includes 13-year-old Zhang Xinyi, here in her first film role as Shu, an innocent school girl who along with her fellow classmates is taken under Miller's protective wing.

The supporting cast includes: newcomer Huang Tianyuan as George, a young boy charged with protecting the sanctuary and its refugees; Tong Dawei ("Apple," "Red Cliff") as Major Li, a war-weary soldier determined to save the life of a wounded compatriot; Atsuro Watabe ("A Quiet Life," "Shizukana Seikatsu") as Colonel Hasegawa, commander of the occupying Japanese army; Shigeo Kobayashi (Todai) as Lt. Kato, his ruthless sidekick, and popular Chinese television presenter, Cao Kefan, as Mr. Meng, a Chinese civilian who will do anything to save the life of his daughter.

"The Flowers of War" is directed by internationally acclaimed and award-winning Chinese filmmaker, Zhang Yimou ("House of Flying Daggers," "Hero," "Raise the Red Lantern"). The screenplay (adapted from the novel by Geling Yan) is written by Liu Heng, whose previous screenplays for Zhang Yimou include "The Story of Qui Ju" and "Ju Dou." The film is produced by Zhang Weiping (here marking his tenth collaboration with Zhang Yimou) under his New Pictures Film banner. The executive producers are ChaoYing Deng and David Linde.

  • @wind20080314 And yes, it is a movie about war, if you find it too harsh, think of the Holocaust. No need to exaggerate really, worse things happened. After all, plenty of heartaches in a war zone no?

  • @wind20080314 more: What I'm trying to say is, not everything from China is communist related, it is another form of stereotyping if that is what you think. Think more, think for yourself.

  • @wind20080314 continued: The way movies go in China is you can do whatever you like, but whether your thing can make it to the Chinese theatre is under the control of the party. So a lot of films they didn't like got sent to film festivals in other countries for recognition and showing, and people in China will try to find a way to see them, cuz most people are more open and don't give a f*ck to the party nowadays.

  • Trying to target western audience yes, to make them feel good about themselves maybe, but if you have watched the full movie, you will see that the white dude actually didn't do all the saving, it was the prostitudes of the Qinghuai river that did most of the saving and sacraficing. Targeting a western audience does not only mean to make them feel good about themselves, it is more of an attempt to get ppl to read the story from our side, like Pearl Harbor and whatever good stuff you have.

  • the latest big movie, that is the most expensive in the country's movie history, and it was produced by local studios and directed bya chinese. And guess what? The hero is white, comes to China to save Chinese people, has sex with a chinese woman

what kind of message do you think this is sending to people here?

  • Errr. Why do ppl think the gov can even controls movies. The person who said that do u even noe about china that much? It's funny coz this guy have had directed several very famous movies before. He did it because he wanted to. N the matter of fact that he is a standard Chinese. I don't think the greedy gov would gives money to this person for making films. Seriously. If u know the communists very well.

  • @keiya1955 Yeah and Japan was the most peaceful country during WW2? Not. China has a shit government that's killing their own people, but that doesn't excuse Japan killing thousands of Chinese in Nanking during WW2. This is their first movie about this incident and look how many Pearl Harbor movies the US made. Why don't you go whine and call the US anti-Japanese too idiot. You remind me of those dumb fucks that deny the Holocaust.

  • It made the Communist Party of China invested enormous sums of anti-Japan movie. Its purpose is to avoid criticism of the Chinese people and the world, countries, Communist Party of China of antics all movies created intentionally to liven up the anti-Japanese movement. This would say classic and typical propaganda tactics of the Communist Party.

  • At that time China had been suffering fr internal turmoil after Qing dynasty ended, it couldn't defense from any invasions. America was used by the Chinese govt. to fight Japs invasion, but Chinese don't give a shit to America they know these white big nose creatures('gwailo' they called) is also the invader before the Japs.

However, as the producer said this film is targeting to western market, the way it was filmed is no different to typical American movies to make them feel good
