Yiddish sounds like an old-fashion German. It is originated in German with some Hebrew words in it, which come from the Yiddish very developed slang and life and some original slang words.
Yiddish lived for hundreds of years, more or less until the Nazis ruined it, so it developed a lot of fascinating culture.
Today it's still alive, but only within ultra-orthodox Jewish groups.

@tierecke Both modern German and modern Yiddish originated from a variety of medieval dialects in Germany. Yiddish has a strong south German element (Bavarian) and some Rheinisch. Hebrew was always an element, so were Romance languages like Provencal, Slavic languages (Polish, Ukrainian,Czech) played a huge riole in shaping and reshaping Yiddish grammar and vocabulary, taking it very far from its Germanic origin. By the way, Yiddish lives and very well outside the ultra-Orthodox community too.

The style and structure of klezmer as we know it today is thought to have come largely from 19th century Bessarabia (Romania), where the bulk of today's traditional repertoire was written. It is based on hora, sirba, doina, all of them of Romanian origin.
For more detail see Wikipedia Klezmer.
