Casey Matthews (#55) highlights / lowlights vs USC

Pros: Old school LB... plays with great tenacity, energy, hustle, and intensity. The emotional leader of the Oregon Ducks defense. Plays with a dominant motor and goes all out on every down.. will never quit. Solid against the run.. can fill gaps and flashes the ability to disengage sometimes. Very good at scraping through trash as long as he doesnt have to navigate through blockers.. can shift through gaps very effectively to make the tackle. Very instinctual.. diagnoses plays as well as any LB in the country. Can diagnose all sorts of offensive plays and designs.. has great vision. Vision is also a testament to how well he shoots gaps once he sees the play develop... can crease through the smallest of openings and attacks with no wasted motion. Reads and reacts very nicely overall.. beats the blocker before the play develops to make the stop at the line. Flashes the ability to slip past blocks. Very good wrap up tackler when he gets his man on the ground.. goes low or drives people back after contact. Recovers well from play-action. Always around the ball in coverage and can make plays because of that solely. Gets great depth in zone drops and has surprisingly good ball skills. Can diagnose routes in coverage and read the QBs eyes at the same time. Oustanding work ethic and desire, mentored by his brother. Comes from one of the all-time legendary football families ever.. great bloodlines. A blue collar athlete, simply a football player.

Pros: Tight and stiff hips.. hinders his ability in coverage. Poor strength by NFL standards, needs to seriously get stronger.. especially in his lower body. Does a poor job anchoring.. gets washed up and eaten up by blockers when he is forced to stack and shed ; until he hits the weight room and gets stronger, will likely struggle taking on lineman at the next level. Does not have good balance flowing through trash and gets caught up in the wash and tripped on his feet. Does not have great lateral agility. Attacks gaps unbelievably too aggressively and fast which takes him out of the play and opens huge lanes for RBs to exploit.. however he could have been involved in a lot blitzes as he played in an aggressive scheme. A little overaggressive in his play but, again, it could be contributed to the defensive scheme. Will sometimes turn his head around too early in coverage.. needs to stay with his assignment longer. Won't post great workout numbers and doesn't have a lot football athletic traits either.. lacks explosiveness, quickness, balance, or any special quality in his game. Doesn't have any short area quickness or burst .. can miss the tackle in space unless he has the angle. Plays too out of control sometimes and doesn't have great change of direction ability. Simply lacks the athleticism to turn his instincts into elite production.. misses too many tackles even though he disrupts a lot of plays with his intuition. May struggle keeping up with TEs at the next level. Limited only to the inside.. not the linebacker you're looking for if you want a versatile, athletic freak, sideline to sideline, run thumping presence. A little overrated because of his bloodlines... many not get drafted in the first 4 rounds.

Matthews played in a system that involves a lot of twisting, stunting, and blitzes by their front 7 which could explain him attacking gaps too aggressively at times.

Teams:
(Cleveland Browns 50%, Cincinnati Bengals 25%, Baltimore Ravens 10%, New York Giants 10%, Jacksonville Jaguars 5%)

NFL Comparison :

Paul Posluszny - Poor man's Posluszny. Identical in smarts, instincts, and high motor. Intense leaders. Both somewhat physically limited and stiff
