Notice: THE KUFIANS LETTERS to Imam Al-Husain:

While still in Mecca (Notice that this event is before the event of Ashura), al-Husain (as) received the letters sent to him by the people of Kufa. Some letters were written by single individuals, others contained two, three, or four signatures, all requesting him to go there because they did not have an Imam. They wrote saying that they never prayed congregational nor Friday prayers with al-Nu`man. Many letters were delivered to him, so much so that he received a total of as many as twelve thousand letters. He did not answer any of them.

The last letter he received was sent by Shabath ibn Rab`i, Hijar ibn Abjar, Yazid ibn al-Harith, `Izrah ibn Qays, `Amr ibn al-Hajjaj, and Muhaammed ibn `Omayr ibn `Utarid. The latter's letter stated the following: The people are waiting for you. They accept no views other than yours; so, hurry, O son of the Messenger of Allah, for the grass is green, the fruits are ripe, and the trees are full of leaves. Come, if you will, for you will be coming to hosts already recruited for you.[1]

THE OTHER LETTERS from people of Kufa

The Shiah had gathered in the house of Sulayman b. Surad Khuzai, where he addressed the people: Muawiyah is dead, and Husayn has refused to pledge allegiance and instead has gone to Mecca. You are his Shiah and the Shiah of his father. If you are confident that you can support him and battle against his enemies, then write to inform him. However, if you fear weakness and lack of determination, do not deceive him into risking his own life. They replied, No, indeed we will fight against his enemy and our lives will be sacrificed for him. He said, Then write to him, and they wrote as follows:

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the
Merciful

To Husayn b. Ali from Sulayman b. Surad,
Musayyib b. Najabah, Rifaah b. Shaddad,
Habib b. Muzahir and his Shiah of believers
and Muslims in Kufah.
Peace be with you. We praise God, other
that whom there is no deity. Praise be to
God who destroyed your enemy, the
stubborn oppressor who took over
guardianship of the community, snatched
away its authority, usurped the fay[2] and
took control without peoples consent.
Then, he killed the best ones and preserved
the wicked. He made Gods wealth circulate
among the tyrants and the wealthy. He was
destroyed just as Thamud faced destruction.
We have no imam. Therefore,
come perhaps through you God shall unite
us on the truth. We do not gather with
Numan b. Bashir for Friday prayer or the
prayer of the Festival. Once we learn that
you have accepted to come to us, we will
chase him away to Syria, God-willing.
