By the late 1960s, a cult of virtuosity for its own sake gained momentum, which eventually sucked all the life out of pop music until Punk arrived. Big Brother does not belong in the shadows you moron. The notion that Big Brother was a "bad band" is an urban myth perpetuated my the Media ... and mindless individuals. Big Brother was in fact an awesome band, if you consider the correct context.

Some fools perpetuate the notion that Big Brother was an awful band. They were not. Big Brother was a psychedelic garage band that explored sound. They were not about virtuosity, they were about rawness and energy - a punk band before their time. Don't compare apples with oranges. In fact, Big Brother became very good musicians by 1968 before Janis left. Janis was great but she will always be remembered for her work with Big Brother, not her solo work.
