I'm not certain, but they have to make a little war cry when they strike, as well as stamp their foot. My understanding is that they need to do all three at the right time in order to score a point. You can always hear kendo before you see it, that's for sure.

I always have a quiet giggle to myself during training when we "take it up a notch" and there is a room of 20-30ish grown people screaming at the top of their lunges.
