@ChorltonBrook They did write a letter, but it's pretty clear that things didn't go as planned. There was also a scene cut from this very episode that said there were what appeared to be burnt documents in the capsule but it was cut, and we felt that people would be able to fill in the gaps on their own.

@ChristopherCLindner Ironically enough we do know that, and half the reason that line was in there was so Walzer could debunk the myth. But it had to be cut for one reason or another so now we're just contributing to it!

The "NASA spent a ton of money on a pen" thing is a myth, although it has an interesting story to it (check it out on Snopes).
