In the play, this is "'Berta 'Berta," a prison work song the men learned while in Parchman Farm (Penitentiary) in Mississippi. You can hear its roots in the field songs of slaves and in gospel call-and-response, as well as the relation to its distant descendant, rock 'n' roll. Actors: Charles Dutton, Courtney Vance, Carl Gordon, Tommy Hollis. Dir. Lloyd Richards.

Afterwards, hear a short clip of a real prison work song.

Interesting fact: Dutton was a real convict (possession of a deadly weapon and assaulting a prison guard) before becoming an actor.

I LOVE listening to this song.

  • Where Can i find the lyrics to this song lol

  • This song fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucking rules.. Greetings from Greece !!!

  • I think there's a line missing from this song...

  • @Murat123aydin456 So as it is today. The 1% pits poor against poor to maintain power. Unfortunately the LIE still holds everyone in bondage. I think this is why you FEEL this song.

  • @Murat123aydin456 You feel so strongly because the song is also about you. Slavery is glorified for the minds of white people. When in truth is was HORRIBLE for them. Folks up in arms about immigrant labor, think about competing with free labor. Most all whites were SO poor they had to "eat dirt." To keep order the fabrication of, "At least you are white" was invented to placate the white masses and keep them from joining the slaves in revolt against the 1% oppressors.

  • @jodmeer Sadly most Americans - Black Americans have NO idea this form of song/music exists. I didn't until this movie. America crushes the truth when it does not suit it dominance pursuit of everything. Giving credit for such beauty works against the stereotype of black folks therefore, turning the system of controlling everyone on end.
