I find physical punishment ineffective as well as wrong. Most kids are wise enough to opt for the quick punishment instead of being grounded, repaying damage, going to jail, etc.

I think nobody talks enough about the statistics regarding the efficacy of corporal punishment. The states that practice corporal punishment in schools the most have the highest crime rates, highest unwed pregnancy rates, highest dropout rates, highest murder rates, etc. If beating kids was so effective, you'd think the statistics would be reversed.

@Indiananm The problem with the "I turned out okay" argument is that everyone thinks that about themselves. Rick Santorum thinks he turned out okay; do you agree?

I was spanked as a kid as well, and I guess you could say I "turned out okay", but I have issues and I could have turned out a lot better. To this day, I can't even have a non-awkward conversation with my parents. There are much more effective, less harmful ways of rearing a child.

@dark0tale0weaver Haha! Your comment just reminded me of something that happened to me as a kid:

I hated cream corn, and I refused to eat it. I was afraid of it in fact. One night, my parents were yelling at me to eat it, and I was crying. My dad said "You want a spanking instead". I said "...Okay" to the spanking.

So yes, it is indeed useless.

@Indiananm And that is why spanking is wrong. You didn't "dare" act like that because you feared the spanking. This is not education, this is animal training. What a good parent should do is help the kid to understand WHY some behaviours are wrong, so that the kid himself doesn't want to act like that.
