Rugby Scrum Training

Front row training at Kirkcaldy Rugby Club.

Half an hour before training is for personal skills.
Each position obviously has certain skills which are more important than others.
The front row's (props and hookers) main attribute is scrummaging.
This training session works on your reaction time and power of hitting the opposition players in the scrum.
This is a VERY basic drill.

whats with the abuse!? one of the first things to teach young front rowers is to hit the contact not let it come to you. so this drill teaches them to attack the contact quickly and powerfully, good starting point...then add the resistance!! too many coaches dont teach young players to win the first hit properly. so good starting drill before adding resistance. one critiscm would be the lads 'jumping' into the contact!! not productive!!

My impression, I think they'd get more out of coming together in pairs. Not crashing into each other. Bind then try to drive each other back.

That said, in the video they're too far away from the bags. The red head can barely touch it. He even missed touching the bag at least once. If you insist on using this drill then move them closer to the bags and put weight on it. Don't let them leave thier feet. Make them drive it at least for a moment.

I mean for fucks sake in a scrum you don't launch into them headfirst like the idiot at 0:38. Come on, jumping at a tackle bag will teach them NOTHING. At the very least get 2 sets of front rows going against each other

yea i suppose that is true but to be honest I think there are a few really good scrummaging coaches over here while there will be many in the southern hemisphere who really know what they are talking about.

I still can't see why these aren't taught at a junior level though, regardless of country. Technique is the key, its also a safety issue hence why drilled into the young ones.

Well, the last time All blacks played Scotland, your tight head (Euan Murray) dismantled our apprentice Jamie McIntosh. It was all over the papers here, NZ and especially Australia are far from the best scrums in the world.

This is in Scotland, and while these drills are basic in NZ and Auss, you have to takeri nto account Auss and NZ are two of the best teams in the world
