Europe & the U.S. were taken by surprise by the revolutionary changes sweeping the Arab world since the beginning of 2011. Now that some of the Middle East protests and revolts are well over 9 months old, some tentative assessments can be made regarding the root causes and longer term impact of thes dramatic events. Are we witnessing the emergency of a "new" Middle East'? Are the dreams of a democratic Middle East for real or will these dreams turn out to be more of nightmare, at least in the short term? Inthis series of 4 lecture we will explore different aspects of the question. What domestic, regional and international forces that fueled these revolts and forced ruthless autocratic leaders out of power? What are the ramifications of a reshaped Arab world for U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East? What are the ramifications for the Isreal-Palestin conflict? What are the ramfications for women's rights and genuine democratic change in the Middle East?
