Asalaamu alaikum...First of all akhi, the phrase you mentioned is not in The Quran but it is in collections of Hadeeth. Second of all, Ma sha Allaah, basketball is a good sport and has benefits for the human being. But if your given proof that wearing Nike is a form of shirk (disbelief in the Oneness of Allaah Subhanahu wa T'ala), then you have to ask yourself this "are things which you put on your feet more valueable to you than paradise?"
Brother.. i know a lot of muslims are enraged at Nike, and i am too. but the Quran sez "Inamal Amalan Biniyat". everything depends on ur intention. i am a huge basketball fan and play the sport about 4-5 hrs a day and nike is a good company for sports. my intention is not to offend islam, cuz im a muslim, but to get products dat will help me improve in basketball. Salam
