@AlexSpalex1 Im fairly certain it was written about the war in Northern Ireland so that would explain the celtic flavour use of the word 'mammy' etc

I hate the war. The government or whatever tries to make you think your fighting for something big like your democracy but really, it's about the money or oil or something like that. I think oil and money is not worth peoples lives.

@wishinevermetyou My interpretation is that his government provide him with a proper education therefore one of his options was to become a soldier (i.e. cannon fodder) for the British Government. It galls me that some kids are leaving school without the ability to read or write. While the statistics focus on kids who refuse to go to school, the government is completely failing the ones who do. These kids should be kept in until they can read and write.

@Lattarnik what she means is that the soldier's family probably couldn't afford a proper education. He chose to become a soldier, because it was an easy(and maybe glorious) way out poverty. But that's just my opinion :-)
