The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), the national Muslim organization, held their first ever National Muslim Convention for New Zealand in Auckland during the Labour weekend, i.e., 24 and 25 October 2009. This inaugural event was attended by Government officials, Non Governmental Organisations and members of the diplomatic community. Along with the VIPs, about 500 members of the Muslim community attended the opening ceremony. The event was officially opened by Pansy Wong, Minister for Ethnic Affairs.

The theme for this Convention was Building Strong Muslim Families and Community. FIANZ leadership articulates that to develop a strong community, it is vital that family bonds and values are strengthened. Collectively, the community will also have the opportunity to explore ways to engage our youth with a view to nurturing them into visionary leaders of the future. The Convention took a carnival atmosphere where families including men, women and children participated.

Saturday morning witnessed the official opening ceremony. Government officials, non-government organizations, Religious scholars, members of the diplomatic community and the public participated in the convention.
