Incidental music composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) in 1811 for the play Die Ruinen von Athen by August von Kotzebue (1761-1819). The famous Turkish march and the overture are often performed separately from the rest of the incidental music.

  • @ashraniyyah This painting is by Giovanni Paolo Pannini, who specialized in painting Greek and Roman ruins. It's called "Capriccio of Classical Ruins."

  • I think the first part of this march is missing. I don't know why it's not more famous. If it was written by Mozart or even Wagner it would be considered one of the grandest of all marches, but Beethoven's other compositions overshadow it! And is that a quartet of horns at 5:25? Innovative!
