Leading UK hard landscaping manufacturing company Marshalls plc recently challenged Scotlands premier TV garden show, Beechgrove Garden, to create a big splash to demonstrate the effectiveness of their domestic permeable paving. The step by step feature shows Marshalls installing one of its leading ranges of permeable paving, Drivesett Argent Priora. Then in a dramatic finish to the piece, the Beechgrove Garden team fill the bucket of a three ton dumper truck with water and tip it, all at once, on to the 40 square metre driveway. This equates to approximately 1100 litres of water saturating the space, well in excess of a hundred year storm landing on the area and all in just a few seconds! Having only one chance to film the presenters true and honest reaction, Marshalls think it is fair to say the faces, words and images will say it all.

These kinds of volumes of water over large areas have now been recognised as contributing to the catastrophic flooding experienced in recent years throughout the UK in our urban areas. In fact, 95% of rainfall in built up areas finds its way quickly into the drainage system and adds to the risk of flooding in heavy downpours. This prompted the Government to introduce new Legislation (England & Wales Only) on developing a front garden area and why Beechgrove Garden asked Marshalls to demonstrate this innovative paving.

  • As an expert in landscaping I have found this video intersting. I have also posted two vidoes on landscaping on my channel feel free to watch them

  • You do not need "Fines" To Bind together.. A rail track has no "Fines" Please check your facts before posting.. I am a PICP Instructor..( Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement) I have been installing Permeable Pavements since the early 90 s Its a great system!! Andrew Vear Southwest Specialties Consulting 775 219 9976 If you have any questions

  • PICPs are built with an open-jointed paver system over an open-graded bedding

layer and an open-graded crushed stone base. The base offers infiltration and

partial treatment of stormwater pollution and, therefore, can be categorized

    as a structural BMP

  • Maintain groundwater recharge rates to preserve stream flows and ecosystems

    as well as recharge aquifers.

    9. Prevent erosion and sedimentation from construction through control practices

provided on site development plans inspected during construction.

10: Reduce overflows in combined sanitary and storm sewers by increasing the

amount of pervious surfaces and on-site detention.

  • And I would also supect that the free draining sub base good be subject to settlement and movement over time due to the lack of "fines" to bind the whole thing together

  • Now bring that dumper full of water back on site after a couple of years, and watch it.......FLOOD. Its all well and good the tree huggers and marketing people selling us SUDS systems, but what they dont point out is that these "permeable" joints will soon block up with silt and detritus and become sealed. Good in theory, but not so effective in practice. .
