@philipchek Whether or not we have the refinement of translating French slang exactly, you have to admit that many more people all over the world have been able to experience this song and this incredible performance as a result of the English translation. That's all I hope for.

@VNRose3 I've shown video clips of Brel to people who barely know a word of French, and they always acknowledge his extraordinary power and presence as a performer. There has never been anyone like him, and there never will be again.

i´d write "just for a second,i believe her" and not "for an instant"..instant...has a little more so factual touch of context....just for a second would fit there better, i guess...see, you dont say im back in a second, and not im back in an instant....
but a great performance anyway. and the translation is also good...lots of work, congratulations...

Each time I watch one of his videos I can't take my eyes off of him. What is he doing that is so darn amazing?

@VNRose3 brel still lives on and influences generations...consider abdl malik, the rapper poet. his musical director is brel's long time pianist arranger....

@ElectricHorseman66 We are all waiting for your fantastic translation.
It is easier to criticize and destroy, than it is to create.

@ElectricHorseman66 it's impossible to translate Brel.

@Rnewmanguy Brel is a splendid reason to learn french methinks, and yes there is a dramatist and actor, a trubadour in him. His songs are like short stories of Chekhov. In a way Woody Guthrie may be, this kind of story-telling and singing poets don't exist any more.

@60okka i'd say in their best songs dylan and cohen have those qualities pushkin describes. but i probably need to know all of brel's songs to be objective in this and i only know about 50.

@Rnewmanguy I have great respect for those gentlemen, Brel is more than that. He has passion and acting in a way shamans do. May I quote Pushkin: "The truth concerning the passions, verisimilitude in the feelings experienced in the given circumstances, that is what our intelligence demands of a dramatist." 1830
Thanks to the one who did the translation but it doesn´t really get near enough, to academic. Jacques Brel uses a very flourish and descriptive slang.

@ElectricHorseman66 Any specific constructive criticism or words of improvement would be appreciated. For instance, you spelled "too" wrong. You spelled it "to" when you wrote "to academic."

beautiful man why isnt this guy better known amongst english speaking places srsly he's equal to leonard cohen and dylan
Rnewmanguy 1 year ago 3
@Rnewmanguy Not only is he the equal, he was the predecessor, they learned from him, especially the bilingual Canadian Leonard Cohen. Brel was in Montreal, Cohen's hometown, in 1967 around the time Leonard was launching his singing career. No one has equalled Brel in performance, though the others have written wonderful songs. He's not better known in English speaking places because people can't understand him. No matter how we translate and adapt, we can't really get him across.
