This year the Winter Garden theatre on New York's Great White Way will be celebrating its one hundredth birthday. In March of 1911 the playhouse saw its first opening night with "The Musical Review of 1911." This very first production featured Broadway newcomer Al Jolson. One of his featured speciality numbers was Aubrey Stauffer's "That Lovin' Traumerei."

Here are Al Jolson and Oscar Levant giving their own spin to that moment in the 1940s Kraft Music Hall.

  • Jolson is certainly part of our pop and cultural history. I have to agree that I also appreciate the later voice. However, we must remember that much of this is a matter of context. Those who have provided accounts of Jolson's live Broadway performances at the peak of his career in the late 1920s would most likely disagree with us.

  • the sound quality is excellent where do you get such high quality recordings? thanks jeff

  • Thanks Jeff. Most of the Jolson Decca canon was restored several years ago for the International Al Jolson Society. I had some very good material to work with for the CD of "Al Jolson with Oscar Levant." You really could not get much better source material. The CD is available at jolson.org. Click on the AL JOLSON SOCIETY button, scroll down to JOLSON ON RADIO AND RECORDINGS, then THE DECCA COLLECTION on the next page. All of the Deccas are listed along with the Levant collection

  • In "The Unimportance of Being Oscar" Oscar Levant refers to him as "the great Al Jolson." As far as being a great entertainer, I'd have to go along with that assessment 100% because Al Jolson was far beyond the realm of just being very good.

The Oscar Levant Shows were lost forever. Only about 1 remains. I wish that Levant's daughters would release home movies, pictures, etc. to the public. I would love seeing what it was like inside the Levant home on Roxbury Dr. when Oscar was king.

  • Very moving indeed. Superb version. Much better than his 1912 rendition. Jolson was one of those rarities whose voice improved with age. Ah the mellow voice of Jolson! Wow, what a treat. Thanks for posting.

  • Wonderful Pau - love that rich Jolson voice

  • great sound and images.

  • Paul,

    Beautiful!

I can now sit back and watch a Master at work. This is the way Jolson really and truly needs to be heard and seen, as via your uploads .... Pat.
