@dtxu1 Eddard went to King's Landing to solve the mystery of Jon Arryn's death. He felt that Robert was in danger, which is why the Starks got involved in the first place. Now, you get into Cersei's incest and Robert's family, and things get complicated, but that's the basic premise.

As far as Littlefinger and Varys, the books and novels have shown that the two don't seem to be working together, or at least, not toward the same goals.

@dtxu1 This is the problem: Ned and Robert were good commanders, but bad politicians. And they lost game of thrones.

Ned pretty much didn't have a choice. Being lord is already drags you into game. Cersei was wrong and there is middle ground in Game of Thrones: You can go into defensive position and hope they leave you alone, but Stark couldn't betray his old friend.

@Glucharina True enough, but if they don't know how to play the game of thrones, then why joining in? Hence the stupid part. Littlefinger and the Spider is using Starks to attack Lannisters, and hence bring chaos, and eventually Deanerys back, any intelligent person can see that.
