  • Roland sold a "Virtual Sound Canvas" which pretty much sounds identical but through software.

I totally get the "nostalgia factor"! I feel the same for many classic games such as Monkey Island 2 and Wing Commander. Doom however I did experience with a real Sound Canvas when I was a kid, so to me that's the version that sounds "right" so to speak.

  • Good on you!

  • Yea it's interesting to discover the differences amongst various Midi modules :-)

AFAIK the Roland Sound Canvas was the main General Midi device and used for composing many game scores. I find that it usually gives you a very authentic and well balances experience...

  • this will NEVER get old!

  • Huh...I was expecting the Roland Sound Canvas to sound different...sounds about equivalent to M$ General MIDI.

  • Sounds really nice, actually. I don't like rock music but I do have to admit these are actually catchy in this form.

  • I used to play Doom with the Sound Canvas audio, played through my Gravis UltraSound. Never heard how it sounds on the real Roland unit, until now.

Must say, the UltraSound did an excellent job as well.

  • doom3 no BGM

    it's mistake

  • DOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @TehDrehstuhl The favorites button.

  • 1- Is this emulated well on any current DOOM ports? 2-It's weird, but I think I prefer the OPL version, maybe for nostalgia reasons (same reason I don't play with texture filtering or mlook, etc)
