This is "Space Harrier" for the Amstrad CPC.
It was released in 1986 by Elite Systems.

The CPC version is very different compared to the other home versions because it uses wireframe graphics for the enemies and and ground obstacles.
Probably the use of raster graphics was too much for the CPC.
That way the game keeps a fast pace and you can also enjoy in game music and sound effects at the same time without serious slow downs.

I also have to admit that i cheated in order to complete the game.
No matter how many times i tried (and i tried a lot) to finish it without cheats, i failed miserably.
IMHO the game is unforgivingly hard due to the great number of things happening on screen and some perspective problems in graphics.

The in game music is a quite nice rendition of the coin op tune and the sound effects are limited but they are doing their job.

  • bloody hell I had this game for the cpc464!!!!! loads of great memories :D esp with gauntlet!!!!

  • awesome conversion to cpc smooth, fast, fun, catchy tunes in my cpc top 50 for sure

  • I remember reading an article on space harrier in a retro game magazine just a while ago! This version is quite good, it was wise to go with wire frame as its more playable. I don't blame you for using a cheat either! Difficult game

  • @tazong i do seem to remember the sega master system version of this was a bit of a gem - remember playing it on my mates machine and it totally blew me away how good it was.

  • back in the day i remember buying this and being so dissapointed - purley because it was so difficult - that led to frustration and that led to me loading and playing something else.

A real shame as grahically it was very nice with lots going on.

  • That's a shame, i know the other two games haven't had any videos whatsoever on YouTube *yet* :)

  • @emuunlim Airwolf (1st part) can't be finished, there's a screen with 2 boxes and the program just enter a loop if you hit any of the 2 and get held but the music keeps playing. Got a 'longplay' of 2 minutes if you want to check!

  • Love this game :D

Only played this version and that weird PSX remake, someday I'll have to try the coin-op ^^

  • Airwolf, Fly Spy and Ball Crazy
