Just a quick question Joe. What oil do you run in the clutch/ primary? I was told by a local shop here to run straight 60 weight motor oil in it. Ever since I did that the clutch doesn't seem to work right. It's as if I'm still in gear a little even though I have the clutch lever pulled in. Also, I ran into a guy at a recent bike nite event that has the same bike as me 1976 Ironhead Sportster. And he said he runs his dry? Sound right to you? I would appreciate your thoughts on this

@jockeyshiftjoe Oh no! What a shame, that's looks like a cool looking old bike! It's ok though, my dad did the same thing with his shadow... and it's still pretty cool. I will try the clutch thing first...though that's going to be hard too since the cable snapped at the handle lever. That's why I have to take the primary off, to replace the clutch cable. I'll get some vice grips on there and see if it does the trick. The phillips head is near the front underside of the cover, near the kickstand

I'm referring to my attempt to remove the primary case btw
@jockeyshiftjoe Yeah I removed the peg and shifter too, as well as the chain adjuster plug, and loosed the chain tension. The cover is starting to come off but it's still caught on something...I think I'm going to have to carefully drill that bolt out...wonderful!
Good videos though, it's helpful to see someone working on these old machines since the old service manuals sometimes leave out tricky details!

@awendehl see if you can try that Clutch setup before you drill out that bolt, because if your speaking of large phillips head in the center of the case that souldn't have anything to do with holding you back. Also sadly I do not own this bike anymore, It was traded for a cage so wife and son would have a way. Im now on a Shadow, jap yes, but I've added a Batwing fairing, & hardbags so I secretly disguised my Metric as a small Street Glide. I hope all works out & your able to remove your cover.

Hey there, I removed all the allen bolts in mine and it's still caught on something. Did you have to remove a phillips head "oil check" bolt near the drain plug as well? I'm hoping I don't have to take that one out because mine is stripped and I'll have to drill it out :-(

@awendehl Make sure you've removed your peg, & shifter, also there may be a nut on the front corner, Also you may need to gently pull in your clutch which will loosen the cover-(but be careful it doesn't fall and hit the floor)- While pulling in your clutch take a rubber mallet and gently tap all around the cover to loosen it (dont pry with a screwdriver as the aluminum around the gasket seal can get damaged real easily, and only rubber mallet no claw hammers. try taht and get back to me.
