Jane Horrocks has fantastic lips. I find her extremely attractive in this. That hair is lovely!

Just looking at Moya Brady here and now I'm wondering if Thom Yorke got the inspiration to cast those misery-guts headscarf-clad leaping freeze-frame dancers in the "Street Spirit" video from this?

@custardaghost Sure, early feature film, though. I much prefer, say, Secrets and Lies, and All or Nothing.

This is hardly an "early" Mike Leigh work. He was already well established by the end of the 70s - even though his stuff before the mid-80s was filmed for TV plays rather than as cinema. That was more to do with UK film funding rather than his fame or quality of work, though - and because he writes as a playwright rather than as a screenwriter.
-
@custardaghost Mike Leigh's early films did have a strange mix of outright cartoon characters and more realistic, layered characters. His later films are much better, though I do like these earlier ones.

Classic nose

@TheArchaeFiend ''rascist!'' hahaha
-
"What do you know about paranoia?" "Not half as much as you do , I'll give you that."
Jane Horrocks should be ashamed of this performance, and so should Mike Leigh for letting her turn a pivotal character like Nicola into some absurdly unrealistic cackling music-hall turn.

Best line in the film--"racist!" Poor Natalie, the family logician, trying to lead Nicola into a bit of sense. Good luck!
