E60 M5 SMG Launch Control

A series of videos showing the E60 M5 SMG's launch control.

The first run in the video which produces lots of smoke was filmed by me, that is to say I was not behind the wheel of the car, so the launch procedure was aborted for some reason and that's why there was so much tyre smoke as it was essentially back in manually launch mode whereby the throttle needs to be modulated to keep spin under control.

The subsequent runs were all driven by me, there was one instance where it bounced off the limited when it should have auto changed up through the gears for me, this might be because my clutch was on it's way out and in fact my clutch went by the end of this day (see my other YouTube videos).

@CareyboBarry you're correct. The first launch I was filming and I let a member of the Performance BMW magazine try the launch control but he didn't keep his foot planted to the floor after initial launch which meant the car aborted the fully automatic launch and the automatic gear up-shifts hence it bounced of the limiter for a while until he realised and pulled the +SMG paddle. During a normal launch, if you don't take your foot off the pedal at all it will do the launch and all upshifts

Hey scoozpuk, I have an M5 and was wondering how many times I can launch it without damaging the clutch system, what is the limit? Oh and do you prefer DSC Off or MDM-Mode while driving? Thanks.

@Minsk45 Daily driving is P500 DSC on, EDC on comfort. M button programmed for EDC Sport and MDM setting for DSC and that's used for spirited country roads, S6 and DSC off I normally reserve for track days or very dry roads which we don't have that often in the UK.

to do launch control do you just press a button and it does the rest?

@holmansmashbros kind of, you press a sequence of buttons (turn off traction control, enable S6 fastest gear changes) then simply hold the SMG gear lever forward and floor the throttle and your revs rise but sit at around 4k rpm and when you release the lever you launch.

In every car magazine, Audi is the one with its tail between its legs. 335 vs S4? M3 vs RS4? 130 vs A4? Z M coupe vs S5? Oh and your R8 V8, yeah an m3 is faster in a straight line. Even an RS6 can barely beat an M5 in a drag. Barely.

But on a track? Hahaha, look up Nurburgring ring times, until the CTS-V, the M5 was the fastest midsized-Saloon car IN THE WORLD around that track.

Luxury? Bmw has been outselling Audi and Merc for the past 5 years...

Uhm...magazines have shown the M5 to be faster against the 06' - 10' E63/CLS 55's.

The M5 would take them in the track and after the quarter mile. Stock for stock, the M5 would walk them on a roll. Only the CTS-V and then Panamera Turbo S is faster than the E60. And only barely.

@carfreakkk It'll do 205 at best. Me and my dad took his out early one morning. Limiter kicked in at 179mph...
