In the wake of charges being dropped recently against controversial religious leaders in Bountiful, B.C., Listen Up is exploring realities of the polygamy landscape in Canada. We spoke with Irene Spencer, who grew up being told that polygamy was not only expected, but required in order to receive the rewards of heaven.
I met her at a winery on Mothers Day with my parents. She got up and spoke about her experience...how many children she has, grandchildren she has, great-grandchildren she has and then she personally signed both "Shattered Dreams" and "Cult Insanity" for me. I was also trying to ask her if she knew Elissa Wall, who wrote "Stolen Innocence", but I just could not remember her name or the books name so...it was nice meeting her though.

I just finished shattered dreams, and I cried many times. I am so glad you kept your faith in God Irene after all you endured at the hands of men posing as Gods. He kept you strong all those years and enabled you to finally break free and start a new life. Your love for God is inspiring, the fact that you did things you thought he would want you to do out of love for him and not yourself. I am glad you now know the true Christian message and can share your experiences with us. x
