The foam is to prevent fuel frothing. It's original application was for race car tanks to prevent fuel surge.

you dont always have to replace the gasket if you take the head off only if its really old and gets torn, but that usually doesnt happen because theyre made of metal

@niper99 it wasn't a no start, it was running really crappy due to a bad carb diaphragm. I got it fixed. it just took me a while to diagnose the problem
-
thats not how u diagnose a no start at all.
-
@niper99 I don't have a clue what you're talking about
-
ok dude u dont have a clue, wow lol

The sponge is installed at the factory, not all gas tanks have them, leave it in. WHY? Glad you asked, it's to keep it from vapor locking, how do I know glad you asked, I repair small engines.
-
how come all engines don't have it then, smart guy?
-
Its to filter out dirt you morons !

no spark plug get white when ther is too mutch of gas geting in ...
that foam piece in the tank is supposed to be there, i had an identical motor on my go-kart with it. i don't really see the purpose though, stuff can still get through it if its supposed to be a filter.
