My junior recital, presented in partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of Music degree, Mees Hall*, Capital University, April 2, 1989.

*pre-renovation

Program...
Mozart, Bassoon Concerto K. 191
Rachmaninov, Vocalise Op. 34 No. 14
Weber, Hungarian Fantasy (Andante e Rondo Ungarese), Op. 35

I am grateful for those years of intense study with and guidance from my teacher Betsy, esp. since I will never have that kind of time to devote to practicing obsessively again!

I do have a better audio recording I've love to match up with this video. The pre-1989 camcorder is in the balcony of a 750-seat echo chamber. The file was converted from an 18-year-old VHS tape to DVD by a professional service, and then to .wmv using Windows Movie Maker. If you have any advice for me, by all means leave a comment below... but you know what I'm working with.

The bassoon is a GORGEOUS Heckel - 9888? - formerly owned by Capital. The hall (and my nerves!) just don't do it justice.

  • The bassoonist is extremely talented, but there's not enough chemistry between she and the pianist.

  • That was...amazing....

    The cadenza's...superb :)

  • I got the entire concerto in order to get the 2nd movement to do for grade 6 :)

I got the Hummel concerto also for Christmas, mainly for the third movement...but I can only play the first part...until it gets difficult.

    No matter :)

Anyway, if you want opinions in reeds, try Howarths :)

  • you still have your bassoon?

    i'll buy it :D

  • Wonderfully played :)

this is one of my favourite pieces of music and I have asked for it for Christmas :)

    BUT...

one of my friends has it and I can only play the 1st three and a half bars!

You're totally amazing though, and your bassoon has a beautiful sound. I have a 2-year-old rented Schrieber :) I love it to pieces even though it's not the best in the world :D

P.S. - What reeds do you use?

  • Actually, it is more professional to memorise as then you can express your feelings and embrace the music without having to look at the music or hitting tha music stand!!!

  • Extremely well played, and one of my favorites too. However, I would quibble that the piano reduction of the orchestra takes something away from the work, always happens with such reductions.

  • Simply supurb! Yes, re-master this excellent work. Too bad I am a string section (Cello) musician...the Bassoon is magnificant, and her execution is wonderful.

  • I love this piece. I'm working on the first movement for Solo/Ensemble.

  • This recording should be remastered using the improved alternate sound file. Not "should" but MUST!! A great sounding bassoon in spite of the poor sound quality.
