Folks here is an audio recording of retired Miami Dade School bus #147720 a 1987 Blue Bird IHC with Navistar Diesel 9.0L engine and Allison AT-545 transmission. Folks this bus was recorded in 1988 while going home after droping most of the students i was the last to get off the bus and manage to get this recording I hope i would have had a better recording of this bus out all the talking on the back ground but it's very hard to do hopefully someone would do a better video or recording of these buses one of these days.

  • I rode an old IH Wayne with the 9.0L in middle school and high school. i think half the IHs were gassers and half were diesels. Though we also had later 80s IH Waynes with DT466s. without knowing 9.0Ls sound just like a GM 8.2 fuel pincher.

  • The same with the Cat 3208n engines i used to think the Navistar 9.0L and the Cat 3208n engines were the same engines.

  • heh, yeah, that mic kept wanting to zero in on the voices over the radio. But ya still got some good sounds here. This sounds like that old 1980 9.0L activity bus I drove in SC. Only it was a 5 speed manual, but it would run 65mph. Unlike our school buses that would only run 45mph.

    Thanks for the audio!

  • Thanks tomorrow ill going to upload the 1979 Thomas Ford B-700 with 370 engine and At-540 transmission and the radio is off on that one.

  • @kaiyoshi2243 I believe that they had a few different rear axle ratios available as options for those buses.....The ones geared for 45 had a numerically high (low geared) rear axle...We had some local Town mini-buses powered by International with shorter wheelbase Bluebirds and Thomas with the 9 liter diesel...rthey topped out at 45 in 4th gear and the engine was racing pretty fast. at that speed....

  • @ns3330 This bus ran at 55 mph to speed the ones built in 1985,86 with the Navistar 7.3L engines ran about 60 mph the 1979 Thomas Ford B-700 with the 370 V8 engines they were governed down to 53 some did 55 the 1979 Ward GMC's with the 366 V8 and the old 1975 Blue Birds and Carpenters int Loadstars plus the 1981,82 Blue Birds with the 345 engines they will just pass the diesel school buses by like they were standing there specially the GMC's with the 366 engines they would hit 70+.

  • I am a big fan of the Blue bird S1800s and Thomas S1800s the 9.0L are loud and had power so hearing the engine here is music to my ears love the sound of that engine.

  • I know, my dad sold GMC topkick bucket trucks for ALTEC that had 3208s. Diesel V8s have a sound of their own.

  • I love the sound of the International 9.0 Buses between 1987 when I was in Winter Haven from 1993 to 1997, and Jacksonville until 2001 before moving to Clay County, Florida. The 1981 to 1982 Bluebirds in Duval County has a 345 Engine when I was 9 years old when I rode a different one.

  • My old school bus used to sound like this one hear. Awesome!

  • I love the sound of that International 9.0 V8. Music to my ears!

  • The Cat 3208 was a 10.4 Liter Engine.

  • The 9.0L is a much louder engine than the 8.2 Detroit but I agree they do sound similar as does the CAT 3208. These 9.0s were real stump pullers and were also known to break an eardrum or two, LOL.

Thanks for posting this MAR1NAb52180. Just great stuff!!
