***Very Important! - Please Read***

DEDICATION: I made this as a birthday present for my friend, since I was stuck in the house all weekend with a cold and couldn't go out and get her something. It's a fanvideo based on one of her favorite books - I hope she likes it :). Happy Birthday, Rachel!

CONTENT: This video is LOOSELY based on the novel "REBECCA" by Daphne DuMaurier. Now, just so I don't get flamed, rest assured that I HAVE seen the BBC miniseries and the Larry Olivier/Joan Fontaine film version of the novel. But since novels like P&P and Jane Eyre are adapted every five years, why not update a classic?

CLIPS/SONG INFO: I do NOT own/did NOT film this video. These clips were taken from the film I CAPTURE THE CASTLE - because the lead actresses Romola Garai & Rose Byrne fit "my" vision (see video title) of the deWinter ladies. The song is FARTHER AWAY by EVANESCENCE. I will delete all comments asking what clips/song I used since they are not only in the video info, but in the actual video itself.

NOVEL INFO: For those of you who have not read Rebecca (by Daphne DuMaurier), this video might not make sense. Please do not feel compelled to come on and express this. No offense, but if you haven't read the book, its quite probable that you won't know whats going on. So read the book, my humble synopsis, wikipedia the info, etc. Don't spam with explicit comments like "this is awful, this is confusing, I don't get it" - they will be deleted.

NOVEL Synopsis (For those who care to read it): The story is told from the perspective of an unnamed English schoolgirl (played in this vid by Romola Garai), who while acting as a travelling companion to a lady in Europe meets a melancholy English aristocrat named Maxim DeWinter. He's much older than her, and she soon discovers that his wife Rebecca recently died in a horrible boating accident. As she spends time with him, she soon falls in love with him. They marry and he brings her home to Manderley, his estate overlooking the Cornish coast. However, things are not as pleasant as they would seem. For the new Mrs. deWinter is haunted by the ghost of Maxim's first wife Rebecca (Rose Byrne) and feels that she will never live up to this woman who the whole town reveres as a paradigm of virtue, elegance and beauty. But how much does she really know about who Rebecca was? And how did Rebecca really die?

My grayscale clips are meant to represent the memories of Rebecca, Maxim & Jack Favell. The blurred clips are the second Mrs. deWinter being haunted by Rebecca's ghost - the two women never meet.

CAST:
Romola Garai: second Mrs. DeWinter
Rose Byrne: Rebecca
Henry Thomas: Maxim deWinter
Marc Blucas: Jack Favell
Henry Cavill - Frank Crawley (cause I felt that fans would be after me with pitchforks if I didn't include him for at least a cameo ;) )

  • I've only seen the Alfred Hitchcock BW movie of Rebecca but this was really good

  • You wouldn't have seen this because it's not a real movie. I just took clips from "I Capture the Castle" and aligned it to the story from DuMaurier's novel.

  • Honey, I would've been after you with a pitchfork just for never using darling Henry in any of your videos! Sadly, I don't remember Frank in the book, I misplaced my copy during my latest move, so I need to find a new one. Oh, well, the one I had was taken from my highschool library's free book rack, so it was falling apart anyway.

  • See, I called it! Good thing I remembered to put him in ;)!!! Frank Crawley was really a secondary character, he was Maxim's friend and I think maybe his lawyer or estate agent (I can't remember). Anyway, he's important because he's a nice guy who befriends Mrs. deWinter and she goes to him for advice, guidance and moral support. I love the fact that there's no romantic intrige going on there - he's just a genuine friend, who remains loyal to both deWinters. I think he also knows about Rebecca.

  • -drools- Yes, I'm a Henry fan...started when I saw Tristan and Isolde, although I didn't recognize him from Count of Monte Cristo, so I was VERY happy with even a small part...and I LOVE Evanescence, so that just made it even better.

And thank you! -needs to either find a new copy or...er...-shuts up about her other option-

  • No problem! And not to go randomnly OT but... Was your account-name by any chance influenced by Wicked? I saw that play in the Queen's theater on my spring trip to London and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! I'm not even a big Wizard of Oz fan but now I'm never going to be able to watch that film again without cringing whenever they speak disparagingly of the "wicked" witch. Everyone in my group was singing as we left the theater that night and I even got the green "Defy Gravity" shirt.

  • You actually put this together extremely well! If you keep the mind set that those two are supposed to be Mrs. Dewinter and Maxin, it really works.

I have only seen the movie with Olivier and Fontaine. However whenever I watch that, since they never actually show Rebecca I have always envisioned Vivien Leigh as her. Leigh actually audition for the role of Mrs. Dewinter so she could perform with Olivier, but was turned down because she just did GWTW. Selznick believed it would be a downfall...

  • Very well done. I never realized how well this movie could fit with the book

  • this is wonderful - I love the book Rebecca and, like you, I keep hoping they will re-make it! I'd love to see a more updated one (more than the 1997 one).

  • good book! chilling and mysterious but loved it

  • This novel is a copy.Carolina Nabuco and see.

  • I now despise you, because I've not been lucky enough to see it. And yeah, I'm the same way now!

-laughs- Having a giggle over Henry in Red Riding Hood...I'm a youtube whore, according to a former friend...and also now imagining him as Fiyero, for some reason.
