Hugh, thanks for the info. I have basically the same problem. Can you cover when finished with soil and grass to hide the drain? Where does the water eventually drain off to? Does it drain off to open air or does it drain out underground when the trench stops?

It's best to add mortar mix in with the gravel. This will help keep the gravel from moving too much.

this is more of a "dry creek bed" and the whole layout is specific to your application, which is to contain a small area of runoff between two converging slopes.
French drains handle both run-off and alleviate saturation (which build up hydrostatic pressure at the foundation ) within an area by channeling water to a gravel filled "seepage pit" well away from the foundation.

Yes you are right as several others have pointed out. I will say that it did survive the 1000 year flood in Atlanta recently!
