There are some songs that should just not be covered. Almost like sacred grounds...they shouldn't be messed with. This was Harrys song.....about Harrys son Josh...not ugly kid joes son josh or Johnny Cashs son Josh. You don't get the feeling or the compassion from covers. Not this song anyway.
God bless you Harry for leaving us this magical masterpiece.

Your vid is a much better quality then what I have. Of course I had to edit out the speech as I could not follow it. I got my copy from someone else on YT.
He was a very, very gifted singer/song writer who was surely missed when he died. Who knows what others he would have created. Sigh.

Covers or no covers Harry Chapin did this song first, he did it best and Ugly Kid Joe and Johnny Cash will never sing or play it with the same emotion because Harry Chapin lived it. Ugly Kid Joe put a rock inflection, Johnny Cash a country inflection but when everything is said and done Harry and Sandra Chapin created the base for them. To every person who likes the cover more then the original think about this way. there would be no covers of this song without Harry.
