Carter Worth, Chief Technical Analyst at Oppenheimer came on CNBC this afternoon and told viewers the run is over ( for now ).

Worth says that while the past six weeks looked nice, stocks are way ahead of themselves and its time to sell or even short!

Carter Worth - April 22, 2009 S&P 500 close $848.29

- The stock market has rallied to a point where it will not go higher
- Stocks have rallied to far to fast
- It's time to consider selling or going short
- Indiscriminative Buying in certain parts of the stock market
- Low Quality stocks are up the most
- High Quality stocks are lagging
- Restaurant Stocks & Retail were the hot stocks
- Stocks like JNJ, KO, WMT, PG aren't participating
- People are looking at technical analysis more and more as a way to navigate through these markets.

The real theme is the divergence between earnings and revenues." -Steven Ricchuito, Mizuho Securities

  • SPX 1,113.69 E-mini S&P 500 1,112.25 Plenty of people are looking at this run-up as "climbing a wall of worry". In my opinion, it is actually a mountain of worry. And mountains have another side. As Willi Unsoeld said after climbing Mt. Everest, "You've climbed the highest mountain in the world. What's left? It's all downhill from there."

  • The blow-off top is a buying climax. It develops as the end of a prolonged uptrend. It signals a change in the nature of the trend and shows a buying frenzy. It has three features.

  • The fast rise and its failure, shows that buyers have disappeared from the market. Sellers have to offer at lower and lower prices to achieve an exit. The close near the low of the day confirms buying and momentum exhaustion. The surge in volume is created by sellers as they become desperate to get out of the stock. The volumes urge does not come from buyers.
