Lydbrook Viaduct was built in 1872 to connect Cinderford to the Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth line via Serridge junction. Was last used for Passengers in 1929 and freight in 1951. I filmed the destruction of the Viaduct in 1966. With the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley attracting many many tourists the removal of the railway lines throughout the whole of the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean must call into question the serious lack of vision the Authorities had at that period!

  • Nice footage. Destroyed by the music. Why does everyone feel they have to smother the blissful silence of these old films?

  • @Greendoggie95

Because in 1964 they had music!

  • I read somewhere one pillar was constructed for £700

if anyone would put it back for that I will fund the 700

  • Remember the goverment was in that period very anti rail. It still is to a certain degree. It wants to encourage people to use public transport but doesn't try to get the fares lowered like the railways are mainland Europe.

  • At that time one could get the 7.30am train off Ross on Wye and be in London Paddington by 10.30. With the recent A40 roadworks it is difficult to get to Gloucester before 10.30. Progress!

  • The whole of the Wye Valley Railway network should never have been taken apart, what a tourist attraction! Clowns in Local and National Government again!

  • those poor men who built this masterpeice must be turning in there graves.....such a waste

  • A lot of people tend to forget that in the 60s BR was losing money hand over fist. So the less profitable lines had to go.

A lot like todays bus routes through the Forest.

The fact is use it or lose it.

  • Great archive vid. There so much industrial stuff to see around this area. Thanks for posting.

  • I used to cycle under that on the way to Cats hill to fish, never failed to look up, good job the roads were not as busy as today ;-)

  • It's really great to see this! Thanks for sharing.
