To provide news and information and give voice to thousands of Sudanese, Internews has built four community radio stations in South Sudan and is training nascent journalists to run them. Internews will build two more stations in 2009. Read the text script here: http://www.internews.org/multimedia/video/sudan/sudan_radio200811.shtm#text
This is a very good project but while the idea of "voice for the voiceless" is emotive and has some significance it is not a sufficient or sustainable strategy. The community radios needs to develop an effective approach to build an audience, secure sources of income/resources and win the respect of the community. A book by Dennis List called Participative Marketing for Local Radio showed how this could be done.
