@keir193 Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK, therefore not part of "the Empire." No Irish person or Scottish person for that matter would EVER consider themselves British, unless of course your friends are from Northern Ireland. If not and your friends do in fact identify themselves as British then they know little of their own heritage.

i have spent half my life in scotland, and i am close friends with several irish families

okay, the british empire doesn't exist now but you know what i mean

and the irish that i know consider themselves british first. and it was a scot that unified the nation, true, but thats ONE of them. most scots that i've known, maybe it was just the area tends to be like this, but they are all anti \british.

Firstly, Irish don't consider themselves British because... they aren't British. Northern Ireland is in the UK.

2nd There is no British Empire.

3rd. Scotland is in Britain as much as England and Wales are. Not willing members of the union,. eh? It was a Scottish kind who unified the nation!! Ha! "Not willing members of the Empire"! That's one of the daftest things I ever read! Canadians should know better!
