@JetMechMA That is correct. What a shame! Only seen a few in operation. Most of them were not even on the UP!

@BudmanPackfan Also as I understand it, it doesn't have enough weight on wheels to fully utilize that 6,000 hp.

EMD COPY CATS 4 STROKE IS A GE THING AND I HEARD EMD 4 STROKE DID NOT DO GOOD FOR THEM LIVE THE 4 STROKE TO GE AND EMD 2 STROKE
-
@enr3870 Really wish that EMD could have added 4 more cylinders to the 20V710...

Ahh..yes. The chugging of a four cycle prime mover. Makes me think of the alco's I work on.

Man, the 265H sounds like an ALCo 244... 8D

@BudmanPackfan amazing how the 4 stroke 265 still had a hint of the EMD 2 cycle "thump" to it. :)

one of the big reasons the 6000 hp locomotive wasn't further developed by GE and EMD was that the railroads themselves found that it was too much horsepower to be flexible in making up trains. They were finding that many trains needed only 7-9,000 hp and putting 2 6,000 hp locos on the lead was a waste. and trains only needing 5500 hp and puting just one loco on it lead to concerns of what happens if there is a problem. The train is then stalled on the main blocking traffic.

The H engine was a good engine But being a new engine things are going to go wrong . improvements general motors was not going to invest in. remember this was build around the time gm wanted to sell emd. China now uses them in there locomotives. 300 brand new h engines.

From a long time here in europe using 4 stroke engines. Prover rentability and fouel consuption and they avesome horsepower.
Seems weird to hear an EMD chugging like a GE.

It's 16V265H. The 710 is a two stroke, the 265 is a 4 stroke.
