A former head of the Army, General Lord Dannatt, says he thinks Britain is losing its moral compass. Lord Dannatt thinks that Army training should address the problem and once that happens the military could be seen as a role model for the rest of the country. General Lord Dannatt thinks that new recruits used to sign up already equipped with a keen sense of right and wrong. A moral code learnt from their families and communities. But Lord Dannatt fears that these days such an assumption can no longer be made. He said it is up to the military to put that right and that mental and moral training are as important as the physical preparations.
