  • I finally, 23 years after first hearing this song, came to learn enough about the Jamaican language to know what is meant by 'mass charlie ground'. It means Mr. Charlie's piece of land. "Mass" is short for 'master' and basically means 'Mr.". And 'ground' means a piece of land for cultivation of crops.
