Sixty years ago this week, North Korea emerged from World War two as its own nation.

And since then it's been one of the world's most secretive and repressive societies. It's also one of the few remaining communist countries.

Our correspondent Mark Seddon travelled to Pyonyang ahead of the anniversary to get an insider's perspective.

  • Communism is not about suppression of freedom.

  • The only North Koreans against communism have already left North Korea or are trying to. They are too brainwashed by the state to know about what it is really like in the world. And if any rebellion of some sorts happened, the military wouldn't be afraid to put them down.
