From the life of Marionettes (Aus dem Leben der Marionetten,1980.), directed and written by Ingmar Bergman.
Robert Atzorn as Peter Egermann
Christine Buchegger as Katarina Egermann
For understanding the movie and this scene in particular one should have in mind two things:
1) The title of the movie is a quotation from a passage in "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi:
"Most unfortunately in the lives of the Marionettes there is always a BUT that spoils everything".
source - Wikipedia
2) "I dreamed I was a butterfly, flitting around in the sky; then I awoke. Now I wonder: Am I a man who dreamt of being a butterfly, or am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a man?"
- Chuang Tzu

How does Bergman manage to do this? How is it that all of this, extreme though it is, makes perfect, but disturbing sense? I think this overlooked film is very close to the themes and presentation of Persona, particularly in this extraordinary sequence.
