Wasteland - Character Creation and Death

Thought it was a bit of a rush to go straight to Highpool and not show off how characters are made.
Here you can see it in its full glory, you roll your stats as in most other RPGs, apply your skills, nationality, sex, and name your character.
Simple as that.

Setting up your characters is mercifully simple, however, realizing which skills are useful at first is not. In this video I was just picking some stuff willy-nilly, however there are a few essential skills you could see me picking for several characters, including Climb, Swim, Assault Rifles and Medic (for two characters). These are skills every party needs if they want to survive. There are a few other skills that come in hand, and these are my "secondary" skills that I assign to specific personal with the right stats.

What makes this difficult however, is deciding which stats are actually useful. The first time you play you have no idea which skills will be the most important, so it's easy to see your party fail miserably multiple times before you finally get the party with the right basic skills. Combat Shooting for example, has no known effect in the game itself, making it virtually pointless. It's easy to see how the name could mislead someone into thinking it had a point though.

An oversight by the developers I assume.

Also seen here is the death screen, what happens when your party dies, I sent them straight into the irradiated waste to show this off, as I hope you'll never have to see this screen again in this playthrough (I'll make sure of that).

Yay Wasteland videos! I'm definitely going to enjoy these, as I always wanted to get into this game. Unfortunately it kept kicking my ass all about the place... but now the tables have turned! Take that, foolish game! Be my bitch!

About the confusing skills; it seems to be a common problem with early CRPGs. You get a generous number of different skills but all too often there's no clear indication (in the game or the manual) which ones are even remotely useful. Finding out through trial-and-error can be fun, but it can obviously get needlessly frustrating as well...
