According to Faithfull, Marianne's autobiography, Mick wrote this song out of frustration of Marianne's growing addictions-he mentions wine here but most definitely her addiction to "smack" as she called it was her downfall. She got all the smack she wanted but it came at a great cost-she lost her soprano singing voice, her beautiful looks aged much too soon, she lost out on great parts such as Polanski's MacBeth, and didn't have an album released for a decade. Such is the tragedy of Marianne and definitely not heeding to the words of Mick's song.
