Here's a closer look at our UL350iS installation on the Zenith CH 650. Since we're waiting on the fiberglass cowl, this is a good opportunity to see and hear the engine without the cowl. The ULPower engine is a direct drive, air cooled four cylinder engine with full FADEC control (electronic ignition, fuel injection, etc.) which is lighter and more fuel efficient than other engines in its class.

  • Are you guys gonna try this one on the 750 as well?

  • @LTF85199 Yes, that's our next project. It should be a simple one since the CH 650 and the CH 750 share the same firewall.

We've also had a lot of interest in this engine from the RV 12 crowd - I guess many are looking for a more conventional direct-drive air-cooled alternative to the Rotax. Van's currently sells the 100-hp Rotax 912 ULS powerplant package for $28,730, which is very close to the same price as installing the 130-hp UL350iS in a RV-12 (we don't yet have all the figures for the firewall-forward accessories costs, depending on prop, cowl, etc.).

Note also that we offer the smaller 97-hp UL260i engine for about $18,500, which is very competitively priced, and several additional models priced well under $25,000. Thanks to the great power-to-weight ratio of the UL Power engines, many owners are finding that they are very pleased with the performance from the smaller engines (as well as the lower fuel consumption).

In today's market the UL Power engines represents good value. The UL Power engine is complete with few accessories required for installation.

Comparing engine prices is often like comparing apples to oranges, as different engines include different components and require different accessories. While we would love to offer it at a lower price we understand the costs of staying in business and supporting our customers long term, and it is why we offer a two-year warranty.

  • is it really worth the $25k price tag?
