Rand Paul Louisville Gun Show Fox 41 6-12-2010

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41)-- Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul reached out to gun advocates in Louisville Saturday. He is trying to shore up support from a major voting bloc. Fox 41 talked exclusively with Paul in a television interview about guns, political support and his strategy for moving past the backlash against his campaign.

Fox 41 was the only camera crew allowed into the Gun Show at the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center, where we talked to U.S. Senate Candidate Rand Paul, about the road to November.

Paul can be seen on his campaign website shooting an automatic weapon. The lifetime NRA member and Gun Owners of America advocate says he is a proud defender of the Second Amendment.

"We must be ever vigilant of our Second Amendment rights. We must continually remind Washington that a majority cannot vote to take away our Second Amendment rights," Paul told the crowd.

He was accepted warmly by gun owners, at the National Gun Day show at the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center. Paul has come under fire during his campaign over controversial statements he has made about Civil Rights, immigration, and the BP oil spill. Paul says that is his personality. He says he's bold, and stands up for what he believes in.

"I think I speak my mind, and I want to say what I think is wrong. And what is wrong is out of control spending, and I say it over and over since the very beginning but I think it's resonating with people," said Paul.

Senator Mitch McConnell endorsed Paul's opponent, Trey Grayson in the primary election. Now, McConnell is setting aside differences and unifying the Republican Party.

"We're really excited about it. Senator McConnell and Senator Bunning and all four republican congressman have signed on to help me with fundraising. We think it's going to be a big help and tit shows that the party is coming and rallying around my candidacy and I think we have a great chance in the fall," said Paul.

Paul also talked about issues he would tackle if elected: term limits on politicians, and forcing the federal government by law to balance the budget, something Kentucky already does.

"But in Kentucky because we have a balanced budget amendment, we're forced to make difficult decisions. In Washington, they just print more money and the deficits get higher and higher but there is a danger to that," said Paul.

Paul says the message that government spending is out of control is resonating with the public and that is one of the things he is fighting for.

Senator McConnell is hosting a fundraiser in Washington, D.C., June 24th.

Paul faces Attorney General Jack Conway in the November election.

@pennywisethatclown What if your government decides to take more of your income? What if they decide to take all of your income? Don't think that it can't happen. Governments become corrupt. We need to be able to defend ourselves from Tyranny. That is why we have the 2nd amendment: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
