he Maori activist who has been selling fake passport stamps to Pacific Island overstayers remains defiant in the face of police charges.

Gerrard Otimi has been arrested and will appear in court on Wednesday on three charges of deception.

He is accused of openly running a scam that has caused a major outcry.

The man accused of taking overstayers for a ride, was invited to take a trip of his own on Tuesday - to the police station.

ONE News obtained footage from an associate of Otimi who was filming a video diary as the police raided his house in South Auckland at 9am.

"Am I under arrest if I refuse?", Otimi asked police.

A police officer told Otimi it was entirely up to him.

"If you want to be arrested you can be arrested. It's over to you."

Otimi was told he was being arrested for causing loss by deception under the Crimes Act.
"I am willing to co-operate two thousand percent 'cause I have done nothing wrong," Otimi said.

Last Wednesday night, Otimi was openly selling passport stamps and residency certificates for $500.

He told hundreds of Pacific Island overstayers that joining his hapu would protect them from the Immigration Service.

Even as he was taken away by police, he was remaining defiant.

"As a sovereign person myself I don't come under those laws of the straw people. We are Tino Rangatiratanga."

Police investigators have been looking into his activities and police say they have uncovered 5000 blank hapu certificates and seized $40,000 in cash.

"He's a very passionate man that believes in his cause. He has welcomed the investigation and he's looking forward to having certain issues being played out in the criminal courts," says Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Pizzini of Counties-Manukau Police.

Detectives are urging anyone who paid for a stamp in their passport like those at the centre of the case to come forward, but offer no guarantees.

"These people are vulnerable. They've been preyed on, they've been part of the scam. But they also have immigration issues that they need to resolve," says Detective Inspector John Timms of Counties-Manukau Police.

But for now it seems Otimi's time as a self-appointed immigration adviser is over.

  • This is why Maoris should never be included in the running of this country. There are things missing in the Maori brain, morality, honesty, integrity, capacity for complex thought. And some are just missing a brain.

  • The cops/government are the big scam artists in NZ,

government is selling the right to stay in NZ without the peoples consent

Cops in NZ are little more that revenue collectors,

  • Throw the key away separatist asshole.

  • @da3gurls1 Let's make one thing clear, we are not your 'manuhiri' and we are not your 'guests' New Zealand is the land of my people the Anglo Saxons, we own nearly all the land, the infrastructure and the economy, we represent 67% of the population and we determine governments. part Maoris are the rapidly disappearing, very disliked remnants of early Polynesion migrants from the Cook Islands [1250ad] and European settlers. Sovereignty was clearly ceded in 1840 and this is not your country.

  • @waxonify I've researched the cession of NZ sovereignty and it was clearly ceded by Maori chiefs in article one of the Treaty of Waitangi. Maori sovereignty ceased to exist in 1840. This conman is simply extorting money from overstayers.

  • @MoralInvasion sad thing is if you were up on "sovereignty" you would agree with him.. you need to do some law research...
