I think the idea is that chess pieces and plastic letters are two notorius things kidlings drop in and flush. However you will notice that no-one is flushing playing cards. They get stuck in the line, opposite corners, and they act as a valve. They turn across the line, you've got a clog. You push a snake in, it turns them sideways then all seems well... for a while.
