The BBQ Iguana wasn't really a club, but a hollowed-out, pre-gentrification P Street hellhole with minimal lighting, a bad PA, and routine power outages and technical problems. But bands did stuff there that they didn't do at 9:30 or DC Space or Positive Force benefits. It was like watching practice: new songs and rough run-throughs were common. It's easy to see why early Shudder was an acquired taste. More to come.

  • Another great and long lost band. Saw 'em play 2/3 times in London in 91/92 and they were excellent. Who remembers the Holy Rollers?

  • I posted a couple of their songs from a 1990 show. I wish I had more. I contacted Chris but he told me, "check YouTube"!!! Maybe we should all look in our attics.

  • I remember a few Fidelity Jones shows there that were incredible. I also think the very first Jawbox show was there, opening for Shudder To Think, and Jay busted his guitar and suddenly their set was over.

  • i think that was the show where i took the shot they put on the vinyl version of ten spot.

  • I need to put the "Pearl To Stone" from Wilson Center, you can see your flash go off when Bobby jumps at that historic moment. Funny!

  • @suggadeg I understand, but for me, there was no "aquisition" about it. Get Your Goat grabbed me by the balls when I first heard it.

    Different strokes, I suppose.

This recording hardly does them justice, BTW. All the wrong freq's are amplified.

  • An acquired taste, but an excellent band nevertheless.

  • this band was always awesome, through all the lineups. so weird and such a high energy level.

  • Thanks for posting this. "Jade Dust Eyes" still holds up after 20+ years.

  • Man, they were so good like 1988-1991... just incredible...

  • I don't know how to feel about their early stuff. I mean, their later work (Goat, Pony Express, 10,000) is SO much more refined. But I guess there's SOMETHING to their older, coarser sound.
