In his only public appearance during a special Washington, D.C., visit, celebrated Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko read aloud a selection of his works to more than 300 people Oct. 21 at 1957 E Street. A vocal critic of the Soviet Union during the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. Yevtushenkos poems are celebrated for their political themes and empathetic portrayal of Russian people.
Yevgeny Yevtushenko..... WHEREVER you are in the world....I thank you for your volume "Twentieth Century Russian Poetry" which I bought in 1993. I have opened it so many times since, and it continues to astound me, inspire me, into my 61st year.

Évtušenko is getting on. He came to Australia many years ago & read 'The City of Yes/No' & 'Zima Junction' in his expressive Russian, Frank hardy reading the English translations. It would be wonderful if he returned to Australia for a last time. I gave my first year students his 'Telling lies to the young is wrong ...', heads nodded - they still don't like being lied to - so why do we, once young, accept so many lies? Have we forgotten our youth? There are no secrets to his poetry, only truth.
