How close do you need to be to the bus to have to stop when it puts its lights on?

There are buses near us that stop on neighborhood streets but a few houses in from the intersection. If you are already at that intersection, about to turn AWAY from where the bus stop would be, and a bus coming toward you suddenly puts its lights on, do you have to wait for it to stop and for the kids to walk to the intersection where you are and then cross in front of you?

Thank you for loading this. However, one issue was not mentioned: how far behind the school bus's stop sign do cars need to stop? This happened to me yesterday on Waples Mill Road around 9am. I was driving north. A school bus, also northbound, pulled over and the stop sign came out. I pulled right up to the bus's stop sign but all of the other cars on Waples Mill stopped about 15 feet behind the bus, so I was abt 30 feet in front of other cars. Where are cars supposed to stop?

"A safe distance" should be the prevailing guideline. Students and adults need safe access to enter/exit the school bus, so 15 feet behind the bus sounds like it would be safer in this case.
